The novelist Alessandro Baricco describes sex as “a sweet violence.” Perhaps there can be no better phrase for the act. Sex is beautiful; there can be no contesting that. Most people would not dare deny the fact that sexuality is a highly significant aspect of the human condition, and one that carries severe responsibilities.

Some psychologists, most notably Sigmund Freud, suggest that the effects of human sexuality extend from the act itself; human sexuality helps shape our identities and our roles in any society we live in, not to mention its biological and health-related aspects (i.e. sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy).

That being said, studies in human sexuality become a necessary endeavor. Aside from its academically and demanding nature, however, all must realize that human sexuality should not be completely repressed; doing so can lead to extremely violent sexual behavior. This is not in anyway, however, a call for mindless sexual gratification; there ARE bounds of legality and personal moral standards to consider heavily prior to any sexual act. Quite succinctly, because of the huge role that human sexuality plays in everyone’s lives, all humans should take time to study and explore (not necessarily carry out) sexual feelings for a greater understanding of themselves. Such rigorous introspection will no doubt allow the individual to have a healthier and safer sexual lifestyle.
